Genesis Studies: Introduction

Welcome! This semester at Uni Bible Group we’re going to be looking through the opening pages of the
Bible: Genesis 1-11. These chapters are foundational to our understanding of God, humanity, sin, (a whole
host of other topics!) and they ultimately point forwards to Jesus as God’s promised serpent crushing
saviour for the world.

As we go through these studies, you may have lots of questions, which is great! Please ask them! Some
may be answered, others not. But important to remember is that as we engage with God’s word, we are not
the authority. God through Genesis 1-11 is going to be asking us questions that will examine our
understanding, hearts, attitudes and lives.

Let’s make sure to approach the word together with humility and curiosity to see what God has to say to us.
Let’s pray that our ears will be open and hearts soft to receive God’s word that we might worship our loving
saving creator and follow him.

Study 1

Getting Started… Literally!
As we come to the beginning of the Bible, what questions do we come with?
Pray

Read Genesis 1:1-2:3

What sort of God do we come across here? (go around the circle and each share one thing about God you
notice)

When it comes to creation, what may be said here about ‘what’, ‘how’, and ‘why’ God creates? (See also how
the some of the Old Testament writers consider the creation account).

  • Genesis 1
  • Is 45:18 (quickly go through this, can skip)
  • Ps 19:1-6; 33:6 (quickly go through this, can skip)

What can and can’t be said about the Creation then knowing these things?

How is man similar / unique from the rest of the Creation?

How is Day 7 different to the other days? What does this tell you about God’s goal for creation?

Thinking it Through…

What do John 1:1-3,14, Colossians 1:15-17 and Ephesians 1:9-10 have to do with Creation?

What other views of our world/creation are there today? Think through the ethical implications of such views.

How does Genesis 1-2 cut across those views?

Responding to the Truth…

What is our natural inclination (Rom 1:18-25)?

As we understand this God, what is the only appropriate response to the God of Genesis 1?

Rather than asking our own questions of Genesis Chapter 1, what questions does it ask us?
